AKA: "The Kid" or "The Harry Potter Of Poker"
Julian comes from Manchester, England. He turned pro the moment he left high school, and is the youngest millionaire in
the sport.
Julian Gardner finished second in the 2002 WSOP to Varkhoni and made his presence known early in the event and after day
1 trailed only professional sports bettor and 7 card stud specialist Alan Boston by a few dollars.
By day 2, the only former WSOP winner remaining was Phil Hellmuth, as Gardner moved into the 1st spot ahead of Chip Reese.
Julian Gardner slipped to 6th on day 3, still good enough to make the final table. None of the final 9 that year had ever
been at the final table before and had a combined career earnings in the WSOP of $450,000.
On the final hand, Varkoni had the J and 8 of clubs and Varkohni had Q 10 when the flop came Q-4-4 with 2 clubs. Julian
Gardner went all-in on a flush draw.
The turn card was a 10, and the river was a club to make Gardner's flush but it was a 10 of clubs to make Varkonyi a full
house - for a second, Julian Gardner had thought that he had won but he had to settle for "only" $1.1 million.
Gardner told the Observer newspaper that he was slightly unsettled by the sheer scale of the tournament.
"Playing in the middle of cheering crowds, with loads of cameras and $3m in cash right there on the table, turns everybody
into a hero and makes it tougher," Julian Gardner said.
